WHAT IS CHEMICAL PEEL?

A chemical peel provides skin rejuvenation benefits by removing the skin’s top layers using a chemical solution, along with blemishes that exist in those layers such as skin pigmentation and fine lines. WHO IS IT FOR?

Generally, fair-skinned individuals are better candidates for this treatment. If you are darker-skinned, you may be more likely to experience uneven skin tone due to changes in skin pigmentation after treatment. It is imperative to inform your doctor if you are prone to cold sores, have undergone any cosmetic procedure in the past, scar easily, or are taking prescription medication for acne, as these factors could impact the outcome of your treatment.

PROCEDURES

Your doctor will discuss the options available to you, and design a personalised course of treatment for optimal results. Most medium and deep chemical peels require pre-peel skincare, which is usually prescribed for 2 to 4 weeks before treatment in order to deliver the best results and minimise potential side effects. Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed before commencement of treatment. Your doctor will then apply one or more chemical solutions, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid or carbolic acid, to small areas of your skin to initiate the peeling process.

Minimal discomfort is usually experienced during light chemical peels like aha and glycolic acid peels, so usually no anaesthetic is given. Most patients feel a slight stinging sensation when the solution is being applied.

A mild lotion or cream may be applied after a superficial or medium-depth peel to help soothe the skin. After a deep peel, surgical dressing will be used to protect the treated area.

AFTER TREATMENT

Most peels deliver results within two weeks. Results may last from months to years, depending on how deeply the skin was treated and the course of treatment taken.

Patients with certain skin types are likely to experience changes in skin tone after treatment due to hormonal influences or hereditary factors.
