Milia seeds aren’t as pretty as it sounds. In fact, they are imperfections of the skin caused by keratin build-up beneath the surface of the skin which leads to blockage of the sebaceous (oil) glands. These bumps presents as small white spots, and are found predominantly on the face around the eyes, nose, and forehead. Although milia seeds are not harmful or infectious, they sometimes are quite bothersome as its appearance can be unsightly and hard to conceal.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Many people experience some form of pigmented lesions. This treatment will benefit you if you are distressed by the extent and prominence of your pigmented lesions.
BENEFITS
The laser works on the principle of selective photothermolysis, such that the combination of high peak power and short pulse width delivers efficient destruction of the targeted melanin (skin pigments) with minimal collateral thermal damage.
The laser is carefully applied to the pigmented lesions where its energy is absorbed by the target chromophores (pigment cells) and converted to heat. The heat breaks up and ablates (destroy) the pigment, thus removing or lightening the lesion. The surrounding non-pigmented areas of the skin are left intact while the ablated pigment particles are naturally absorbed and eliminated by the immune system.
Different types of pigment lesions exist at different depths of the skin. Pigment lesions may manifest as a result of factors like sun damage, genetics, aging or side effects of medical procedures, and vary in size, shape and prevalence in a given area.
PROCEDURES
During consultation, do provide your doctor with any pertinent information on your medical history, pre-existing medical and health conditions, and medication and/or supplements you are currently consuming. Your doctor will review your skin condition, take you through your available options, and design a personalised course of treatment for optimal results.
Patients typically describe the laser effect like the snapping of rubber bands across their faced during the procedure. Topical numbing cream (anaesthetic) may be applied prior to treatment to minimise any discomfort.
EXPECTED RESULTS
Results usually depend on the extent and characteristics of the pigment lesions. For example, freckles typically require 1 to 2 sessions. Patients often see an immediate darkening of the treated freckles, which flakes off in 3 to 5 days’ time. In many cases, more sessions are required to achieve significant improvements. A course of treatment combined with other forms of treatments, such as chemical peels and topical applications, may be recommended to achieve optimal results.
Treatment of darker skin is more challenging due to the higher concentration of melanin in the skin.
AFTER TREATMENT
There is no downtime involved. Side effects are uncommon and are generally minimal and short-term, if any.
